IDN and Punycode: Non-ASCII Domain Names

An IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) is a domain containing characters beyond ASCII — accented letters, Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic, or emoji where a registry allows them. Punycode is the encoding that makes IDNs work in a DNS built for ASCII: the Unicode name is converted to an ASCII string with the xn-- prefix, so münchen.com is stored and resolved as xn--mnchen-3ya.com.

How the two layers fit together

Users see the Unicode form; the DNS and registry see the Punycode form. Both refer to one registration. Registrar search, RDAP records, and zone files use the xn-- string, which is why an IDN can look like gibberish in a portfolio export. Any converter (or your browser's address bar) maps between the two.

What investors should know

  • IDN markets are real but thin, concentrated in languages with strong local demand — liquidity is far below ASCII equivalents.
  • Homograph risk cuts both ways: lookalike characters enable phishing, so browsers display suspicious mixed-script names as raw Punycode, which can gut an IDN's usability.
  • Registry support varies: each TLD defines which scripts and characters it accepts, and emoji domains are only valid in a handful of TLDs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does xn-- mean in a domain name?

It is the Punycode prefix marking an encoded internationalized label. Decode the string after xn-- and you get the Unicode name users actually see.

Are IDN domains a good investment?

Only within markets you understand. Demand is language-specific, browser display rules can suppress the pretty form, and resale venues are thinner than for ASCII names.
