Lease-to-Own Domain Deals

Lease-to-own (LTO) is a domain sale structured as installments: the buyer pays monthly, gets use of the domain immediately, and takes full ownership after the final payment. It lets startups afford premium names without the upfront capital, and lets sellers convert names into recurring income at a higher total price.

How the mechanics work

In platform-managed LTO, the domain typically sits with the marketplace or a neutral holding account during the term: the buyer points DNS and builds on the name, the seller receives monthly payouts, and title transfers only when the schedule completes. If the buyer stops paying, the domain reverts to the seller, who keeps the payments made — the main reason sellers accept the structure.

What each side is trading

  • Buyer: gets an otherwise unaffordable name now, but usually pays a premium over the cash price and risks losing the name (and the brand built on it) by defaulting.
  • Seller: gets a higher total price and monthly cash flow, but waits years for full payment and takes on buyer-default churn.
  • Both: the platform's custody arrangement replaces trust, in exchange for a commission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns the domain during a lease-to-own term?

Arrangements vary by platform, but commonly the domain is held by the marketplace or in a controlled account rather than by either party, with the buyer granted use and the seller retaining the right to reclaim it on default. The contract terms govern.

Is lease-to-own more expensive than buying outright?

Usually — the installment total typically exceeds the cash BIN price, reflecting the financing and the seller's default risk. Some sellers offer short interest-free terms as a pure conversion tactic.
