Registrar: The Company You Register Domains Through

A registrar is a company accredited to sell domain registrations to the public and manage them on behalf of the owner — think GoDaddy, Namecheap, Porkbun, or Dynadot. The registrar is your interface to the domain system: it takes your payment, submits registrations and renewals to the registry, sets nameservers, and controls account-level features like auto-renew, transfer locks, and WHOIS privacy.

Registrar vs. registry

The registrar sells you the domain; the registry operates the TLD's master database. When you register a name at Namecheap, Namecheap (the registrar) sends the registration to Verisign (the .com registry) via EPP, and Verisign records it. You never deal with the registry directly for most TLDs — the registrar is the retail layer. For gTLDs, registrars are accredited by ICANN and bound by its policies.

Why investors care

  • Renewal pricing varies widely between registrars for the same TLD — the registry wholesale price is fixed, the retail markup is not.
  • Every registrar has its own dashboard and alerts; a multi-registrar portfolio has no single view unless you build one.
  • Transfers between registrars take days and trigger a 60-day transfer lock; consolidation is a project, not a click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my registrar the owner of my domain?

No. You (the registrant) own the registration; the registrar manages it on your behalf. You can transfer the domain to another registrar at any time, subject to the 60-day lock that follows a new registration or a recent transfer.

Does it matter which registrar I use?

For the domain's function, no — the registry record is the same. For cost and operations, yes: renewal prices, transfer fees, API access, and security features like registry lock support differ significantly between registrars.
