Typo Domain

A typo domain is a domain name that is a common misspelling or mistyping of another, better-known domain — a swapped letter, a missing letter, a wrong TLD — registered to catch traffic from users who mistype the original. Registering typos of trademarked brands is called typosquatting and is a well-established form of cybersquatting.

The common typo patterns

  • Missing or doubled letters (exmple.com, exaample.com).
  • Adjacent-key substitutions (ecample.com).
  • Transposed letters (examlpe.com).
  • Missing dot or wrong TLD (wwwexample.com, example.co).
  • Pluralization or hyphenation variants of the original.

Why typo domains are mostly a hazard, not an asset

When the target is a trademarked brand, the typo's entire value derives from the mark — which is why typosquatting cases are among the most one-sided UDRP outcomes, and why the US ACPA explicitly covers confusingly similar misspellings. Typos of generic words are a different matter: a misspelling of a common dictionary word targets no one's mark, though it usually also carries little value. For portfolio owners, the defensible use of typo registrations is defensive — brands registering their own common misspellings and redirecting them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is owning a typo domain illegal?

Owning a misspelling of a generic word is not. Registering a misspelling of someone's trademark in bad faith is actionable — it can be transferred through the UDRP and, in the US, can trigger ACPA statutory damages. Specific cases turn on their facts; this is not legal advice.

Should businesses buy their own typo domains?

Many do — registering the most common misspellings and wrong-TLD variants of a primary domain and redirecting them is a routine defensive practice that also keeps those names out of bad-faith hands.
