How to Value Your Domain Portfolio (Without Fooling Yourself)

Ask what a domain portfolio is worth and you'll get numbers spanning an order of magnitude depending on who's asking and why. That's not a flaw in the asker — domains are illiquid, heterogeneous assets with no ticker price. Valuation is an estimate with error bars, and honest valuation is mostly about keeping the error bars visible.

Here are the approaches that hold up, roughly in order of how much a real buyer would respect them.

Comparable sales: the closest thing to truth

The strongest evidence for a name's value is what similar names actually sold for. Public sales databases and marketplace reports let you find comps by keyword, length, TLD, and pattern. The discipline is in the word "similar": a different TLD, an extra word, or a weaker keyword can move value enormously, and cherry-picking the one heroic comp while ignoring ten quiet ones is self-deception with citations.

Comps also teach the deeper lesson: most reported sales cluster at unglamorous prices, and headline sales are outliers precisely because they're rare.

Appraisal tools: useful, in their place

Automated appraisals estimate value from features — length, keywords, TLD, comparable-sale patterns. They're genuinely useful for triage across hundreds of names and for a sanity check on your own bias, and largely useless as a price a buyer will honor. Use one — like our AI domain appraisal tool — to rank your portfolio, then price individual names with comps and judgment.

Tier the portfolio, value the tiers

Valuing a hundred names individually invites a hundred small optimisms that compound into a big one. Tiering is more honest: a top tier with names that have real comps and inquiry history, a middle tier that's plausibly salable, and a long tail whose realistic value is near zero. Most portfolios' value concentrates violently in the top tier, and pretending otherwise is how renewal drag gets rationalized.

  • Tier A: names with comps, inquiries, or offers — value individually, with evidence.
  • Tier B: plausibly salable — value as a group, conservatively.
  • Tier C: the long tail — assume near zero; anything above that is upside.

The liquidity discount nobody applies

A portfolio's retail valuation assumes each name eventually finds its one right buyer at full price — which can take years per name, with annual sell-through commonly cited in the low single digits. Value-if-you-had-to-sell-this-year is a different, much smaller number: wholesale buyers of whole portfolios pay a steep discount to aggregated retail estimates precisely because they're buying the waiting.

Keep both numbers. Retail estimate for strategy; discounted liquidation value for honesty about what the asset is worth as money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are automated domain appraisals accurate?

They're consistent, not accurate — good for ranking large lists and catching your own bias, weak as a prediction of any single sale price. Real pricing comes from comparable sales and, ultimately, from an actual buyer. Treat appraisal numbers as triage, not truth.

How do I find comparable sales for my domains?

Search public sales databases and marketplace-reported sales for names sharing your domain's keyword, length, pattern, and TLD. Weight recent sales and exact-pattern matches most heavily, and look at the cluster of comps rather than the single best one.

What is my portfolio worth if I sold it all at once?

Substantially less than the sum of your per-name retail estimates. Bulk buyers price in years of carrying cost and low sell-through, so whole-portfolio offers come at a steep discount to aggregated asking prices. That discounted figure is your honest liquidation value.
