What .co is and who uses it

.co belongs to Colombia and is administered under the country's ICT ministry (MinTIC). After 15 years under .CO Internet and its successors (Neustar, then GoDaddy Registry), the government re-tendered the contract and registry services transitioned to Team Internet (CentralNic) in 2025. For registrants the transition was designed to be seamless — same lifecycle model, same registrar channels.

Its positioning has been consistent since the 2010 relaunch: a short, credible alternative for startups when the .com is taken or expensive. Real companies build on .co, which supports genuine end-user demand — though a meaningful share of .co buyers still treat it as the placeholder until they can afford the .com.

Renewal costs

Retail renewals typically run $25-$35 per year. First-year discounts are common and steep — sometimes under $10 — which makes the renewal price the number that matters. As a ccTLD, .co pricing is set by contract with the Colombian government rather than ICANN caps, and registry premium names with elevated renewal rates exist. Roughly 2-3x .com carry cost is the right mental model.

What happens when a .co domain expires

.co deliberately mirrors the ICANN gTLD lifecycle, and the current registry documents a standard model.

• •Auto-renew grace period (up to 45 days): your registrar can still renew at the normal price. Most registrars route expiring .co names through their expiry auction streams during this window.
• •Redemption period (30 days): the name is deleted by the registrar and recoverable only via a redemption restore, typically $70-$200 plus renewal.
• •Pending delete (about 5 days): irreversible; the name is queued for release.
• •The drop: the name becomes available to the fastest registrant — drop-catchers take anything with obvious value.

Transfer rules and gotchas

• •Standard EPP auth-code transfers that add a year, with the usual 60-day post-registration and post-transfer locks.
• •Watch renewal pricing drift: several mainstream registrars have raised .co retail renewals in recent years, and the registry transition makes it worth re-checking your rate annually.
• •One-character and two-character .co names are registry-reserved or premium; their renewal rates can be far above standard.

.co aftermarket demand is real but concentrated in short brandables and exact-brand upgrades; long-tail keyword .co names resell poorly.
