Domain Redemption Period: What It Means and What to Do

The redemption period is a 30-day registry safety window after a registrar deletes an expired .com registration. The domain is not available for a new buyer during this period. The former registrant still has one path back: ask the sponsoring registrar to restore it.

If this is your domain, the practical advice is simple. Contact the registrar now and pay the restore cost if the name matters. Domain Monitor is not the right answer while restoration is still available.

What redemptionPeriod means

In public registration data, the status redemptionPeriod means the registry is holding a deleted registration for possible restoration. DNS is normally disabled, transfers are blocked, and the domain cannot be registered by someone new.

The website and email being offline are expected in this state. They do not prove that another registrant owns the name. The registry is waiting for either a restore request from the sponsoring registrar or the end of the 30-day window.

How to restore a domain in redemption

Only the sponsoring registrar can submit the normal restore request. A different registrar, a web host, and ICANN cannot bypass that process for you.

  • Confirm that the public status includes redemptionPeriod.
  • Contact the sponsoring registrar shown in the registration record.
  • Ask for a redemption restore and the full price, including renewal.
  • Pay before the registrar's cutoff and keep the confirmation.
  • After restoration, verify that the status and DNS return to normal.

Why the restore costs more than renewal

A redemption restore is a separate registry operation from an ordinary renewal. Registrars publish their own restore fees and may add the renewal charge. The exact price varies, so use the amount in your registrar's current fee schedule rather than a number from a generic article.

The higher price is painful, but it buys a protected recovery right. Waiting for deletion replaces that right with competition from auctions, backorder systems, and anyone else who wants the name.

What happens when the 30 days end

If no restore completes, the domain moves into pending delete for five calendar days. At that point no normal renew, restore, or transfer operation is available. After the five days, the registry purges the registration and the domain may become available for a new registration.

A valuable name may be captured immediately by a professional service. An ordinary personal name may receive little attention, but there is never a guarantee that a manual registration will win.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the redemption period for a .com?

The redemption grace period is 30 days for .com domains after the registration is deleted by the registrar.

Can someone buy my domain during redemption?

They cannot register it as a new public registration during the redemption period. A registrar auction may create a future claim under that registrar's process, but the former registrant may still have restoration rights during the applicable window.

Can Domain Monitor recover a domain in redemption?

No. The correct action is to restore the domain through its current registrar. Monitoring is for a domain that is no longer directly recoverable or is controlled by someone else.
